Armadale Station, 7th of November 2004
Opened :
1897
Original Name :
Armadale
Station History :
In 1897 the first station attendant arrived at
Armadale
Station, from here on for the next 60 years or so, Armadale would be a
bustling
railway junction on the South
West
Railway Line to Bunbury from Perth.
In July 1904, the duplication of the line from Burswood to Armadale was
completed
In the 1920's a station was
built
at Tredale to service the Armadale Senior High School, the station was
built on the line used by the State Brick Works (also at
Tredale).
In 1959 the frieght line from Fremantle to Armadale (via Robb's
Jetty) was pulled up, leaving only the occasional reminder of the line,
such as bridge
foundations.
In 1990 or there abouts, the remnants of the old Armadale Station were
demolished, how ever the old signal box used at Armadale Station, has
survived, it was relocated to the newly built Armadale Tourist Centre.
On the 6th of November 2004, the 3rd Armadale Station opened for
business.
This new station is the 3rd Armadale Station in 16 or so years.
The new Station is quite an improvement on the previous station which
was
just a long platform shelter for waiting bus and train passengers. When
I
visited
the new station on the 7th of November 2004, I noted that there are
lifts
for access to the island platform, plus stairs and a large platform
shelter
which
shares the characteristics of the new Bassendean and Maylands Stations.
There
is a transit guard booth on the platform and a substancial station
building
on
the town centre side of the bay platform track, for which right now i'm
not
sure of what the use will be, except a base for the transit guards and
PTA
staff.
All in all it's a great looking station, a vast improvement on the
prervious
station.
