Avon Yard is located at the end of the
Dual Gauge, bi-directional Avon Valley Line, which runs from Midland,
some 100+ kms to the west. The Avon Valley line officially opened in
1966 and replaced the Eastern Railway Line, which ran from Midland to
Northam, via Chidlow and Spencers Brook. Avon Yard is the main hub of
Railway operations in WA's Wheatbelt, with lines radiating from Avon to
Perth, Albany, Kalgoorlie and Mullewa, with other branch lines in the
varcinity of Avon being, the Miling Branch, Wyalkatchem/Koorda Line,
Beacon and Kalannie Lines and the York to Quairading Line.
Avon Yard is 5kms from the town centre of Northam and replaced
Northam's old town centre railway yards in the late 1960's. Avon Yard
is a major CBH Grain hub, providing loading and unloading facilities
for Standard Gauge and Narrow Gauge Trains.
