Meckering Station, 7th
of December 2007
Originally
Opened : c1893 (Narrow
Gauge)
Original Name : Meckering
Station History : The original Meckering Station, was
constructed around the time of the opening of the first section of the
Eastern Goildfields Railway in
1893. It was located in the
original town centre of Meckering, which doesn't exsist today, due to
the Earthquake that destroyed Meckering in 1968, also
due to constant flooding of
Meckering's town centre, the town was eventually moved to it's present
position on the right hand side of the Great Eastern
HWY, heading from Northam
towards Merredin. The original station, remained in use, until 1970,
however in 1966, the standard gauge line had already
been constructed through the
outskirts of town and a new station was in operation, this had made the
old station redundant. So it was sometime around
1970 that the original station
was demolished, however, you can still see where the platform of the
original station was, as you cross the railway line, at
the site of the original town
centre. Meckering's second station was located around 1km from the
town, at the Meckering CBH, wheat
silo's sidings. It was
the
same design structure as Cunderdin's station, Tammin's 1960's to 1990's
station and Kellerberrin's 1960's to 1990's station, with the simple red brick building.
On the 1st of December 2007, the new station, with a high level
platform was officially opened.
