Southern Cross Station

Southern Cross is located on the Eastern
Goldfields Line, between Moorine Rock and Yellowdine. Southern Cross,
was once a terminus of the orginal
narrow gauge EGR Line, back in the days of the Coolgardie Goldrush,
where passengers had to make the rest of the journey to the Eastern
Goldfields,
on foot or by stage coach. This lead to Southern Cross, having an
important link to the railways for many years, as it had a larger than
usual station and
was also a junction point for the railway line to Bullfinch and
eventually on the same line, Mukinbudin, Koorda and Wyalkatchem.
In the 1960's the new Standard Gauge Line was constructed and bypassed
the town, to the north (Standard Gauge Station, is about 2km north of
town
centre) and by the early mid 1970's the old narrow gauge EGR had been
closed down, leaving the old station yard in the middle of town empty.
At some point after the closure of the NG line, the Station and yard
were completely removed, leaving a large vacent block of land today,
not a trace can
be found, apart from track embankments to the north of the station yard.
