Merredin
Station
Merredin's Old Narrow Gauge Railway
Station, 27th of January
2005
Opened : 1895
Original Name : Merredin
Station History : The
original
Merredin Station was constructed in 1895, however the large narrow
gauge station (above) was built
with bricks that once formed 3 stations along the Kalgoorlie-Boulder
Loop Railway,
I think that included the original Boulder Station.
Merredin has always been an important point along the Eastern
Goldfields Railway, for many years,
it was full of hustle and bustle, due to it being a junction for lines
connecting to Narrembeen, Bruce Rock, Northam,
Southern Cross and Nungarin. Merredin's Station yard was very
extensive, it covered all of the area that today is now a park and a
car park, the current
Station site and another park where the station's water tower still
stands.
That's the good thing about Merredin, as well as it having a modern
1960's station, that the prospector stops at, it still has it's
original grand station, on the opposited side of the tracks. At the old
station, it seems as everything
has been saved, including the large signal cabin high up over looking
the whole area, also the many buildings on the station's platform.
The station is fenced off however, this is because, the station is now
a museum, showcasing
railway artifacts as well as things from the
towns history.
The only thing that doesn't survive today, that I can think of is, the
foot
bridge that provided access to the station and a way for the towns folk
to cross the once large station yard. The yard's facilities were
shifted
many years ago
to West Merredin Marshalling yard, this is the hub of the Central
Wheatbelt Narrow and Standard Gauge railway system.
As you are coming into Merredin from perth, along the Great Eastern
HWY,
you can see the marshalling yards on your right, I did notice that West
Merredin, has a control signal cabin that looks identical to one
found at Leighton,
so that must have all been built back in the late 1960's when the
standard gauge railway was extended to Perth through Merredin.
