(Showgrounds Station, looking west down platforms
3 and 2, 5th of June 2004)
Opened : 1954
Original Name : Showgrounds
Station History : The Station
called Showgrounds today, is not the original Showgrounds station, as the
original Showgrounds station was located a few
hundred metres west from Loch Street. That station was demolished in the
early to mid 1990's, when the current Showgrounds station was built. The
current
one is closer to Claremont and more central to the showgrounds. The station
seems to be designed similarly to Claremont Station, as in platform
configuration and also with the same paint scheme and platform roofs,
as seen on the island platform of Claremont.
Showgrounds Station, was the first in the new design of Stations, that
will soon become common place on the older Perth Suburban Lines, how ever
at the moment, only two other station shares this design and that is Maylands
Station and Bassendean on the Midland Line. Bassendean's new station
opened on the 31st of May 2004, it incorporates half of the remaining 1911
station building with new shelter sharing a simular design to that of the
Showgrounds Station.
Showgrounds Station is a special events station, this means, trains only
stop here, when Claremont Showgrounds are being used, say for expo's, conventions
or for the annual Royal Show, held every year in October, Showgrounds
is also used every now and then when, work is being undertaken on the Fremantle
line betwen Showgrounds and Fremantle, therefore, trains from Perth, using
the Fremantle line, terminate at Showgrounds on the siding platform (the
far
right hand platform in the photo above) and buses transport passangers
the rest of the way to Fremantle.
