Katanning Station, 9th
of
January 2003
Built :
June 1889
Original Name :
Station History :
Katanning Station was one of the original stations along the Great
Southern
Railway. The orginal Katanning Station may actually be the Station that
was later used at Kendenup (I'm not sure of this),
which is north of Mount Barker.
In 1978 the last passenger service ran from Perth to Albany along the
line and since then, many of the Stations along the line have not been
ooked after and are now in a state of disrepair. Katanning Station has
been refurbished, and restored as part of the work for the
dole scheme.
Evidence of this work is the platform had been re-surfaced and the
white picket fence
which
blocked access to the track side of the platform is gone, plus some
work on the station buildings roof has been carried out.
Katanning once boasted four track leading out of town, one to Wagin,
Albany, Pingrup and Donnybrook, the latter was closed in 1982, due to
flood damage. The branch to Pingrup was cut back to Nyabing in the
1950's and today is still in place to Nyabing, but hasn't seen any rail
traffic since around 2005 or 2006. This Branch was unofficially closed
by Westnet Rail in June 2009, along with the Gnowangerup, Quairading
and Trayning Branches, but all were unofficially reinstated days later
by Westnet, after talks with the WA Government.
