Wagin
Station (with half of the platform missing), 23rd of April 2008
Built : 1889
Original Name : Wagin Lake
Station History :
Wagin
Railway Station opened in 1889 at the time of completion of the Great
Southern
Railway from Albany to Beverley.
Wagin Station was originally called Wagin Lake, as that was the name
of the town at time when it was owned by the Great Southern Railway.
In 1896 the Western Australian Government bought out the Great Southern
Railway along with the private town of Wagin Lake and the WA
Government then remaned the Station and town to, Wagin.
For many years throughout the 20th centuary, Wagin was one of the major
passenger stops along the line to Albany, it was also the junction for
lines to
Kojonup and eventually Donnybrook to the West and to the East, Lake
Grace and eventually to Hyden and Newdegate.
In the past 15 years or so, Wagin's Loco depot has been closed and
demolished,
it's station yard has dramatically been downsized, leaving only ballast
where it's extensive yard once was.
Since 1978, when the last, Albany to Perth Passenger train stopped at
Wagin, Wagin's Station has deteriated, with the platform starting to
crumble and
the station buildings needing a bit of repair, hopefully in the near
future, Wagin Station will be totally repaired to it's former glory,
same
as York, Beverley,
Katanning, Tambellup and Mount Barker have been restored, on this line.
