Bayswater Station

Bayswater Station, January 2002

Opened: 1896
Original Name : Bayswater
Station History : When the station was opened in 1896, the platform shelter that was being used further down the line at Bayswater Junction (the original station in
the Bayswater area) was relocated to Bayswater
Station, to be used as the shelter for the island platform.

Bayswater Junction was constructed to serve as a station at the junction for the Ascot Race Course Branchline, however when the current station location was
selected, Bayswater Station became the junction for the branch line.

The Branchline ran along the Midland line and then veered to the
right at Cresco bend to cross the Swan River and Terminate at the Ascot Race Course (1896 to 1956).

Originally plans had been made to make Bayswater
Station the junction for the South West Railway to Bunbury, a Colonial Businessman, proposed for the
South West Railway to branch off from the Eastern
Railway at Cresco bend and make it’s way back down towards Bunbury, the Government of the time agreed and
construction began in 1886, however it
seems the finances must have dried up, because for a while the railway only went as far as the swan river shortly after leaving the
Midland line.

Eventually,
the Western Australian Turf Club petitioned for the railway to be extended to service Ascot Race Course and this was done in 1896. (The South West
Railway branch ended up being layed from the junction at East Perth Station in 1893).

Bayswater Station these days is only a passenger halt, as with nearly all the stations on the metro railway lines, however back in the stations hay day, it was
an important junction for race goers who had to switch trains going to and from Ascot Race Course, the station had sidings that local industries used.

Bayswater Stations Signal Cabin was responsible for the line between Cavendish (Cresco Bend) and Meltham,  later on Bayswater’s staff were also responsible for
manning Cavendish Signal Cabin and Ascot Race Course’s
Station.
