Original Name : Chidlow’s Well (1884 - 1920),
Chidlow (1920 to 1966)
Station History : Chidlow Station was the terminating
point on the eastern railway after the line was extended from Guildford
in 1884.
Before the Mundaring Weir had been thought of, Chidlow was the main
town in the Hills area, Chidlow was situated on the main road to
Northam and eventually by 1886,
it would be connected to York by Railway. However after the Mundaring
weir project had started,
workers from all around had
converged on Mundaring, to work on the weir
project, Mundaring then grew from just being a siding on the
Eastern Railway, to a main
service centre for the hills district, as it
had to accomodate the many workers living in the town and at the weir
construction site.
Even though Chidlow was no longer the main town in the district, it
still remained an important stop along the Eastern
Railway, it was also the end of
double tracks which ran up through the Mahogany Creek Deviation from
Midland.
Chidlow, had a resonable sized
yard, with a water tower and a turntable, the Station building was
quite large for a hills station, it actually remained
at the station site for many
years after the closure of the line, how ever due to the work of
vandals, the station was eventually demolished in the
1970's (I think).
Today, not much is left at the Chidlow Station site, some concrete
foundations can be seen in the park where the station yard once was
located, plus some
information boards give information and show some pics, as to what the
station once looked like. Some local art has been erected in the park,
pretty much
at the exact site of where the station once was.... the art is a metal
sculpture of a train (seen in the last pic on this page).
