Midland Terminal and Bus Interchange, 15th of December
2003
Built : 1968
Original Name : Midland Terminal, or
Midland Station History : Midland Terminal was constructed in 1968,
at the time of the dual gauge upgrade on the Midland line from East Perth
to Midland.
A major overhaul of WAGR's suburban and country stations was taking place
at the time, many stations were being demolished to make way for new
modern and cheaper stations.
Midland Terminal was built in place of the old Midland Junction Station,
which is further down the line away from Perth, Midland Junction was the
original station for the district, how ever, with the closing of the Midland
Railways Workshops, land was free to be redevelop, so the Midland Centre
Point Shopping Centre and the Midland Terminal were constructed in it's
place. Midland Junction, was down graded, to be used only for the
workers at the WAGR Midland Workshops, until 1971, when Midland Junction
was finally deleted as a station.
Originally Midland Terminal, consisted of 4 narrow gauge platforms, however
sometime in the mid 1990's the platform closest to the Midland
town centre, had it's siding removed, leaving just the two middle bay platforms
in use by suburban trains. The southern most platfrom (#1), two
years ago was converted from a narrow gauge line, to a dual gauge line, allowing
the Prospector to make stops at the train level platform, rather
then the bus stop, ground level platform located about 100 metres from the
Terminals entrance.
Currently Midland Terminal is going through a long over due facilities upgrade,
with high ramps for access to the standard gauge Prospector cars
employed on platform 1, a safety fence has been installed on platform 1 and
2 and a secure passenger car parking area has been put into place.
