Walkway
Station, 15th of February 2004
Built
: 1st July 1887
Original Name : Walkaway
Station History : Walkaway Station was the original
terminus of the WAGR’s railway from Geraldton. When the Midland Railway
connected Walkaway
to Midland Junction, Walkaway
became an important junction station. Midland Railways (MRWA) engines
would pull trains all the way from Midland
Junction (Midland, east of
Perth), to Walkaway, here the WAGR’s engines
would take over and pull the train the rest of the short distance into
Geraldton.
The MRWA tracks finished just
south of the station at the Evans Road Level Crossing and from then on
it was WAGR tracks, the staff at Walkaway, were
paid half and half by both
company’s. Walkaway Station Building is an exact copy of Claremont
Station and also very simular to York Station, all 3
stations were made of stone and
had corrigated iron roofs. The Station,
loading ramp and goods sheds at Walkaway are Classified by the National
Trust,
a turntable for turning WAGR
trains was once at the station how ever that was removed at some time
after the Midland Railways were bought out by the
WAGR. A Station Master was at
Walkaway Station from July 1887 until Sept 1967. On the 17th of January
1983, Walkaway closed as a Staff Station
and on the 25th of May 1986,
the public siding was removed.
Today Walkaway Station is
museum for the local districts around Gerladton, the station building
is in need of a bit of repair, there is also some other
heritage railway equipment
around the station, like a crane and as I mentioned earlier, the goods
shed.
