Mullewa Station, 16th of February 2003

Openned : 1894
Original Name :
Mullewa
Station Facts : The railway from Geraldton to Mullewa openned in 1894, the government realised the area around where the station is, was good for
farming and so land was allocated for agriculture and also a town site, next to the station. The name Mullewa came from the nearby Mullewa Spring.
It's not certain, but the aboriginal meaning of the word Mullewa is 'Place of fog'.

Eventually Mullewa station became a junction for 2 lines, one that branched east, to Yalgoo and Mount Magnet and to other places such as, Cue,
Sandstone, Big Bell, Meekatharra and Wiluna. The second line branched south and went via Morawa, Perenjori, Wubin, Dalwalinu, Wongan Hills,
Goomalling and joined up with the Government Railways southern Network at Northam. Mullewa became an important stop along the government
railways line to Gerladton (the other more direct line, linking Mildland to Walkaway (south of Geraldton, was privately owned, by the Midland
Railway Co), as it was the only route for the Government Railways to reach Geraldton and also Mullewa had water facilities for the steam trains,
a reasonable station yard with a goods shed.

The original Mullewa Station and yard were originally on the town side of the Goods shed, not the side that it is today.

Only a few years back the stations rail yard was pulled up, there were a few sidings and loops, a line running through the old goods shed, there would
have been a second line running along the opposite side of the station (to the one in the photo), but this has been pulled up at sometime in the past and
now trees have grown in it's place.

One of the old water towers still remain, across the road from the station on a small hill, also the water column is sitll in place along side the main track
west of the station.

Mullewa Station and facilities have a rustic feel about them, it feels as if your in a time warp walking around the station and yard, but I guess this is the
case because it's on edge of the northern farming area of WA, it's the most northerly Railway Station still with a working, used line running past it.

The Station building looks simular to Harvery's Station building, but from my observations it looks as if some extensions have been made to Mullewa
station at the eastern end of the building, so if it is the same as Harvey Station, then Mullewa may have been built around the same time, which is the
1920's.
