Opened : 1912?
Original Name : Gnowangerup
Station History : Gnowangerup Station was constructed in 1926 (I
believe), and is of the same design as such stations as Kojonup,
Quairading,
Kalamunda, Lake Grace, Dalwallinu, Mukinbuddin and also I think Kulin,
as in the 1910's to 1920's this was one of the usual designs of smaller
stations in WA.
The branch line that Gnowangerup is located on, joins up to the
mainline (GSR) at Tambellup and once used to extend further from
Gnowangerup, to
Borden and ultimately terminate at Ongerup, however just before steam
engines were pulled from service here in WA (around 1970), the line was
pulled up between Ongerup and Gnowangerup, making Gnowangerup the
Terminus.
In 1986, the Station building was closed as a working station and
remained unused till the year 2000, when it was purchased by a local
businessman,
dismantled and reconstructed at the Lily Vineyard, near Borden, on
Chester pass Road. In 2003, it was finally rebuilt and opened as a
Restaurant, to
accompany the Lily Windmill at the same site.
In 1992, the water tower which was built in
around 1970 was still in place in the station yard, this water tower
was built because the older original
towers had been demolished, because WAGR thought they had no need for
them anymore with the emergence of diesel locomotives as the main
motive power for freight in WA, however steam locomotives were needed
again due to a bumper crop of wheat, but with no facilities at the
station
anymore, a new cheaper tower was constructed. It was eventually removed
in May 1992 and taken to pieces, then transported to Whiteman Park,
where the BB Railway hopes to some day re-build it at Village Station.
